Gross figures before taxes. Divide annual salary by 2,080 (40h ร 52wk) for the standard hourly equivalent.
Your paycheck is your gross pay minus mandatory deductions. For a W-2 employee in the US, these are:
Pre-tax deductions (401k contributions, HSA, FSA, health insurance premiums) reduce your taxable income and are not included in this calculator's estimate. Adding them will lower your actual tax bill.
The standard formula assumes 40 hours/week ร 52 weeks = 2,080 working hours per year:
If you work part-time or take unpaid leave, adjust the "hours per week" and "weeks per year" fields in Hourly mode for an accurate result.
Bi-weekly = paid every 2 weeks = 26 paychecks/year. Two months each year will have 3 pay dates.
Semi-monthly = paid twice a month (e.g. 1st and 15th) = 24 paychecks/year.
To convert annual net pay: divide by 26 for bi-weekly, or by 24 for semi-monthly.
The US uses a progressive tax system โ each bracket rate applies only to the income within that range, not your entire salary.

Taxable income = gross salary minus standard deduction ($14,600 single / $29,200 MFJ in 2024). These are marginal rates โ only income in each band is taxed at that rate.
Take-home pay = Gross salary minus federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), and state income tax. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums reduce your taxable income further.
The Social Security (OASDI) tax rate is 6.2% for employees on wages up to $168,600 (2024 wage base). Your employer pays a matching 6.2%. Self-employed individuals pay both halves at 12.4%.
Multiply hourly rate x hours per week x weeks worked per year. For a standard full-time schedule: hourly x 40 hours x 52 weeks. Example: $25/hr x 40 x 52 = $52,000 per year.
Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions. Net pay (take-home pay) is what you receive after federal taxes, FICA (Social Security + Medicare), state taxes, and any pre-tax benefit deductions are subtracted.
Bi-weekly pay means you are paid every two weeks, resulting in 26 paychecks per year. In two months of the year you will receive three paychecks instead of two. Semi-monthly pay (twice a month) results in 24 paychecks per year.
For a single filer in 2024, a $70,000 gross salary falls into the 22% marginal bracket (income above $47,150 is taxed at 22%). However, your effective federal tax rate will be lower โ roughly 14โ16% โ because the first dollars of income are taxed at 10% and 12%.
The 2024 standard deduction is $14,600 for single filers, $29,200 for married filing jointly, $21,900 for head of household, and $14,600 for married filing separately. This reduces your taxable income before brackets are applied.
For non-exempt employees under FLSA, overtime (hours over 40 per week) must be paid at 1.5x the regular rate. Overtime wages are subject to the same income tax and FICA withholding as regular wages, but the additional income may push you into a higher marginal bracket.
