What this age calculator does

Working out an exact age is fiddly because months have different lengths and leap years add a day every four years. This age calculator does it precisely: enter a date of birth and it returns the age in completed years and months, plus the total number of days lived. It's handy for forms, eligibility checks, birthdays, pet ages, historical dates and any time "how old exactly?" matters.

Because it counts the actual calendar — accounting for leap years and the real number of days in each month — the result is more accurate than the quick "this year minus birth year" estimate, which can be a year out depending on whether the birthday has happened yet.

How it works

The tool compares the birth date with today's date. It counts complete years first, then the leftover complete months, adjusting if the day of the month hasn't been reached yet (so someone born on the 20th isn't counted as a month older until the 20th arrives). The total days figure is the raw difference between the two dates in days, which automatically includes every leap day in between.

Tips and common mistakes

Use the full date, not just the year, or you risk being a year off. Mind time zones if you check around midnight — the "today" used is your device's local date. Remember leap years are already handled in the day count, so no manual adjustment is needed. And for legal age thresholds, always confirm the rule in your jurisdiction; some count age "on or after" a birthday differently for specific purposes.

How age affects eligibility

Exact age matters most around legal and administrative thresholds. In the US you can vote and are treated as a legal adult at 18, can typically rent a car (sometimes with a surcharge) from 21 or 25, and reach full Social Security retirement age at 66–67 depending on birth year. In the UK you can drive at 17, vote at 18, and the State Pension age is rising toward 67. Because these rules hinge on whether a birthday has actually passed, the "year minus year" shortcut can put you on the wrong side of a cut-off. Working from the full date — as this calculator does — avoids claiming or being denied something a day too early or too late.

Chronological age vs other measures

The number this tool reports is your chronological age: the literal time since birth. It is the figure used on forms, for school years, insurance bands and pension dates. Other concepts — "biological age" estimated from health markers, or a pet's age expressed in "human years" — are separate approximations and are not what eligibility and paperwork rely on. For a dog or cat, you can still use the calculator to find the true elapsed time since birth, then apply a species-specific conversion separately if you want a human-equivalent figure.

If you know your date of birth and today, the gap to your next birthday is simply the days until that date returns on the calendar — useful for planning a party, a retirement date or a child's school cut-off.
