Every currency in the tool is stored relative to the US dollar, so any pair — even two currencies that aren't USD — can be converted through that common base without needing a separate rate for every possible combination. Rates shown are reference mid-market values — actual bank or FX transactions may include a spread or fee on top, which is why the amount that lands in your account is usually a little lower than a pure mid-market calculation.
You're paying a $1,200 hotel deposit in Europe and want to know the cost in euros. With the reference rate EUR 0.918 per USD: 1,200 × 0.918 = €1,101.60. If your card charges a 3% foreign transaction fee on top, the real cost rises to roughly €1,134.65.
A camera listed at £850 on a Japanese retailer's UK storefront needs converting to yen to compare with the local price. GBP→USD is 1/0.787 = 1.2706, then USD→JPY is ×149.50: 850 × 1.2706 × 149.50 ≈ ¥161,468.
A freelancer invoices a US client for €3,500 of design work. Converting to dollars: 3,500 ÷ 0.918 = $3,812.64. That's the reference amount before the payment processor's own conversion margin is applied.

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the global buy and sell price for a currency pair, with no markup. Banks and card networks add a margin on top — often 2-5% — plus a fixed fee, so the amount you actually receive is usually lower than a mid-market conversion.
Major currency pairs move continuously during market hours, sometimes shifting more than 1% in a single day around economic news. This calculator uses fixed reference rates for quick estimates; for live executable pricing check your bank or a currency broker at the time of the transaction.
Compare the mid-market rate shown here against the rate your bank, card or exchange counter actually offers. Fee-free cards and licensed online transfer services typically stay closest to mid-market, while airport kiosks and dynamic currency conversion at checkout are usually the most expensive options.
