Most classes don't weigh every assignment equally — a final exam usually counts far more than a single homework set. A weighted average accounts for that by multiplying each score by its category weight before averaging.

Scales vary by school and course — some use +/− grades or a different cutoff (e.g. 93% for an A). Check your syllabus for the exact scale that applies.
Multiply each grade by its weight (as a decimal), add the results together, then divide by the sum of the weights. For example, a 90 worth 40% and an 80 worth 60% gives (90×0.4 + 80×0.6) ÷ (0.4+0.6) = 84.
Use the "What Do I Need" tab: enter your current weighted average, the weight of the final exam, and your target overall grade. The formula is: Needed Score = (Target − CurrentAvg × (1 − FinalWeight)) ÷ FinalWeight. If the result is above 100, the target is not reachable even with a perfect score.
An unweighted average treats every assignment equally (simple mean). A weighted average gives some categories more importance — for example, exams worth 50% and homework worth 20% — which better reflects how most syllabi calculate final grades.
On the standard US 10-point scale, 84% is a B (80-89%). Common cutoffs: A 90-100, B 80-89, C 70-79, D 60-69, F below 60. Some schools use +/− grades (B+ 87-89, B 83-86, B- 80-82) — check your syllabus for the exact scale.
